You'll never completely eliminate them. Use a good fire ant killer that you place on the mound as soon as it shows up. The workers take it into the colony and they all die. It's only a matter of time before another one will pop up somewhere else though.

Spread malto meal around the infested area and there nest, they will eat take it back into the nest where they all share and die, it expands their bodies past the bloating stage.

I'd try boric acid (Borax laundry detergent) mixed with peanut butter. 50/50 mix and leave it for them. I heard that from someone else, never got to try it, but sounds right to me.

If you mean ordinary little red ants, I have used a product I bought at WalMart. I believe the manufacturer is Pic. They are small metal poison bait traps. The directions tell you how to place them. They are child, pet, and wildlife safe because they are completely enclosed in a metal casing except for tiny entrance holes which you punch in the sides. My cottage no longer has any red ants, so I am pleased with this inexpensive solution.

Its redneck, but effective. Find the nest, pour gasoline on it, only a cup or two will do, then give it a good count of 30 to soak in. Those colonies go deep, so let it soak. Then throw a match on and let it burn itself out. Take all appropriate precautions of coarse, a garden hose nearby is a good plan.
