What factors contribute to the liberal views of Democrats?

You know I have always wondered why Repuglicans can say being liberal is a bad thing. It really isn't, we think before we act, we explore new ideas, and we care about the human race.

why are people so happy to categorize themselves into little boxes along the political spectrum?. . Wouldn't it be liberating if everyone had their own ideas and opinions, and then voted for a person who most reflected those beliefs? Who cares that democrats are "liberal" and republicans are "conservative." the political scene has changed so much and become so polluted with crap that it's all the same to me at this point.. . I know where i stand on abortion, gay marriage, health care, illegal immigration, taxation, etc. and that's how i think, it's not "ok well this group of people b/c i dont have opinions" i vote for the person.. . in otherwords, liberals and conservatives (politicians) are all lacking in their own ways and both parties drive me up a freaking wall. it's not about the people it's about THEM. my goodness.

The democratic party, which was once a great group, with leaders like FDR and JFK, have fallen victim to modern left-wing infiltration. . . They are no longer the party of vision and compassion but have become a muddled mess of double-talking, crowd-pleasing, idiots. . . They are not what Democrats used to be. They are a mutation of wannabes who will say anything to get a vote, do anything to create support and never stand for damn thing unless it will help get them elected.

...because they create for themselves a utopian "vision" which is completely separate from reality. Anyone who challenges the vision with facts is intolerant, a warmonger, insensitive, racist, homophobic, and wants to make the poor poorer and take school lunches away from innocent children.

Contrary to mainstream belief in America, the word "liberal" is not negative or something to be ashamed of. "Liberal" means generous, as in kind to others and not only thinking of yourself all the time (like most Republicans). On the contrary, "conservative" is more akin to "anal-retentive" or even "paranoid" for that matter. Maybe we can rename the Republican Party the "Anal Retentive Party". It makes a lot more sense, considering all the twisted, disgusting goons who share those beliefs.
