How can I obtain the DD214 number for my grandfather?

Get as much of his personal information as you can including his service information. Then go to the following web site and fill out the online form to request a DD214. Good Luck!!

You can request a DD 214 from the Veterans administration if you are the member or one of his/her dependents or descendants (Wife, Children, Grandchildren Etc...). You may have to some of the pertinent information like his name and service/Social Security Number, and the branch of service he was attached to. look in you local yellow pages for the local veterans administration office for more information.

Hopefully he took it by the court house and let them make a copy of it for safe keeping - if not then you will have to go through the military system and you will be his age before you ever get a reply. The best thing I can tell you to do is go by your closest military post or your local national guard unit and ask for some help.
