It doesn't mean to be afraid of him. It means to respect him and honor his wishes and think of how much he loves and cares for you and what he has done for you. A "fear" of God is basically just having a conscience. Knowing right and wrong and knowing when God wouldn't approve of something.

^^^No...it means to FEAR him. If you do something that is considered a sin (anything fun) that you should fear him because you disobeyed him and will be sent to hell.. . Like Adam and Eve. They were blind, and they ate an apple. Then they could see. Why would god make them and everything around them beautiful if they could not see anything? So he kicks them out! What a jerk!. . Some people have told me that I will go to hell...for real.

Humans naturally fear the unknown; hence the saying "we have nothing to fear but fear itself." Because we cannot see, smell, hear, or touch god, some humans doubt his existance. and that's where the fear comes in. We fear because we truly do not know.

You answered your question. Why do you try to do what is right? To do right is to "fear God". Do you have a father you love and admire? If you did something against his expressed wishes, you fear his discipline. Why would he punish you? Love. So when someone offers you a joint, you think of your father who loves you. You "fear him". Fear of dissappointing him, and fear of getting punished. But that fear keeps you out of danger, keeps you obeidiant, and will later help you greatly in almost EVERY aspect of your life. Another translation of the word "fear" could be translated "awe".. . BTW-The punishment of hell is reserved for those who want nothing to do with God. God will honor that respect by putting them someplace where NONE of His presence or creation exists. Be very careful what you ask for regarding your eternity.
