Up to 1931 the robes were always green as Father Christmas was supposed to be a forest dweller. That Christmas the Coca Cola company had a massive advertising campaign and had hundreds of 'Santas' parading through the streets all over the USA giving bottles of Coke away. Naturally they wanted to maximise the advertising impact so all the Santas were dressed in red, Coca Cola's official colour. This continued and became copied and popular until now red is the universally accepted colour for Santa's uniform.

Because Coca Cola changed it from green robes (or a bishop's robes for the original St Nicholas)... and their advertising did the rest.

Is this, like, a riddle or something?. I thin it's just 'cause it's a distinctive symbol. It's red, it stands out. Plus red is a happy color.
