What does Santa Claus represent in the context of Christmas?

years and years ago there was a man, st. nicholas, who went around and gave money and gifts to the poor. he would put it down the chimney if possible or he would get it to them somehow. just as giving gifts now is symbolic of christmas, santa claus is the spirit of saint nicholas.
