What is the reason behind the popular saying that a dog is a man's best friend and a diamond is a girl's best friend?

I agree with Murphs. I think maybe the saying "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" means that diamonds are supposedly the way to a girl's heart and a guy who gives a girl diamonds is looked upon favorably. I'm not sure though.

When they say a dog is man's best friend they don't mean only men, they mean mankind (men and women).

Diamonds don't drool, shed, jump or poop. Men are better equipped to handle those behaviors.

Because women are all spoiled and materialistic while men are just a lot easier to please...

A diamond given to a woman by a man whom she loves makes her feel special. She wears it and thinks of the man she loves. It makes her feel good inside. A dog to a man makes him feel special. When he gets home, the dog is there waitng. The dog loves the man no matter what the man does, and that makes the man feel special.
