Why do some Americans struggle with geography?

I may not be able to tell you a direct answer, but when over 50% of American 18-24 year olds can not find IRAQ on a WORLD MAP, there is a problem. This is only coming from a concerned college level student, but also a geography major!

I think mostly because the USA is pretty geographically isolated compared with other continents - there aren't that many other countries close by. Also they think the US is the center of the universe and it's not worth bothering learning about other parts of the world.

Not all Americans are geographically challenged. (Just the ones in high school).

The only geography I had in school was learning the names of the states and their capitals! In college I was a geo minor but what really makes me more geo aware is that I read world news and travel...to more places than Disney.

We are a nation of elitist who find no value in anywhere else in the world. Sadly, we are becoming much like the British in their colonial period. We have become so self centered here in America that we haven't time for the rest of the world.. "Dumbing down of America," sadly I have to agree with that somewhat. Education isn't important. We want all the goodies in life but are not willing to expend the time, energy and hard work to get them. We are the "Easy" generation. If it ain't easy, we don't care!
