Lincoln asked them to abolish slavery. The Southern Sates did not agree as that would mean losing their entire workforce which worked in their plantations and farms and were the source of their wealth and economy.. . Faced with no choice, the Southern States left, what followed was the Civil War.

The south wanted to leave so they could keep their economy based on free labor from slavery. The Kansas Nebraskas act passed in March 1854 let the people in those territories decide the issue for themselves ( if they wanted slavery or not) which pissed off the North which saw it as a violation of the Missouri Compromise which was suppoed to keep slavery below the 36 30 lattitude line. This takes us to Bleeding Kansas, which was the settlers fighting over the issue, then Harpers Ferry, John Browns execution, the fort sumter attack and then civil war but basiclly it comes down to rich white slave owners being too cheap to pay for field hands.. . . The Confederacy, as they were later known, seceded from the Union because Abe Lincoln signed the ammendment abolishing slavery. The Confederacy needed the slaves to do the work in the fields that gave them crops to sell and make money from.
