Why does Microsoft Access have a high price tag?

It's because it's software that's rather complicated (databases are big things, and they need to be fast and reliable), but mostly because typically only companies will use it - so they charge more, because companies can afford more. Indeed, a company would probably not buy a database at $40 - that looks very, very dodgy.

It's only expensive for developers, it is free to use for end users once the application is built and turned into an executable.. . It is not free like the express databases because it is three products in one: it is a database, a GUI design tool and a reporting tool.
