i believe the expression was 1st used by a writer in a novel, one of the spy writers,(le Carre or Shute or someone of that genre) but i can't think of his name at the moment.. . And i belive it is both because relations between East and West became cold after WW2 and also becasue no actually fighting took place, it was more a battle of the minds as opposed to a typical war.

It was called a cold war because no shots were ever fired directly between the US and the USSR.

The Cold war is actually a war without without arms and guns.It arose due to antagonism, suspicion and rivalry between the Communist bloc led by the U.S.S.R and another bloc of western nations led by the U.S.A.

It was called the cold war because after a while they stoped fighting and never actually called it quits. No fighting happened so it was a "cold war".
