It clogs the fans and causes equipment to overheat. Most high tech equipment is has a coating on the circuit board to prevent short circuits in the components. Dust is really not that harmful for non moving parts.

well, dust buildup in your computer can eventually produce a bad hard drive and dust buildup can also create an environment for static electricity. When you take a computer apart, one of the first things you do ist to de-statisize your self by touching a non grounded piece of metal, this will help prevent your shorting out your computer. Best thing to do is by a can of compressed air and use it to spray clean your computers, printers, etc.. . The Wolf

Don't kid yourself, dust is a foreign material and doesn't belong in there.. . If it builds up enough, it can form a blanket over the electronic parts and raise the temperature, which can cause failure eventually.

Mostly, it can interfere with airflow inside computer cases, which in turns makes it harder to cool the internal parts.

It can get stuck in the fans or the heatsink. It could cause static electricity to short circut your motherboard. Most likely the temperature would go up if you didn't clean your pc for a while.
