There is a coil under the warmer that heats the water. The heated expanding water is forced up the tube that sprays the hot water on the coffee grounds.

It's a metal tube sticking down into the water. Electricity makes it hot (like an electric heater,) which causes the water to rise up the tube (heat rises...) Once it hits the top it makes a 90 degree turn, and drips onto the coffee grounds, and into the pot.
