Rest deprivation is endemic and yes the brain does have a cumulative memory for rest deficit. The most common cause of your problem is swelling in the nose which leads to mouth breathing. This may explain why you had fewer problems at a relative's house if the air was of a better 'quality' than the Dorm room. A prescription cortisteroidal nasal spray solves the problem of swelling in the nose and you may find that other factors depriving you of rest will be more obvious once that is resolved. I see this problem every day and suffer with this myself.
