The unfortunate truth is that many Americans aren't interested in geography and feel no reason to learn about life beyond our borders. The subject of geography is not stressed in schools where preparation for reading and math standardized tests has taken over the curriculum. It's not important to many (but not all) Americans.

Because they are idiots.. . They know nothing about anyplace other than their own country. . I live in South Africa and they STILL think we have lions and elephants roaming the streets; while we have many first world cities.. . ALOT of them regard Africa as one big country!. . I think is due to the fact that they have such a HUGE superiority complex, and regard themselves as the saviors of the whole of mankind! Also because they have a BIGOTED IDIOT for a president. He doesn't know things about his OWN states!

Because many college students today can't pass an eighth grade geography test. One survey found that 30% could not tell you where Canada was on a blank map.

You can stereotype against americans however when I was taught history in my younger yrs in America whenever we spoke about and war that the U.K. was in it was only reffered to as England. Also many students in my class did not know that the U.K. is composed of England, Wales, Scotland, and N. Ireland. I was lucky enough to be english and welsh and know the difference.

I go to school in the U.S. and they don't really teach to much about other countries or other cultures however I'm very interested in geography, maps and the history of other countries but I can't say the same for my friends in school I asked one of my friends to name the capital of Cuba and the capital of Germany for Cuba he said Puerto Rico was the capital and for Germany he said Paris was the capital it doesn't take a genius to figure out that these answers were wrong and as for the matter of the difference between the U.K. and England the U.K. is made up of four countries Northern Ireland,Scotland,England, and Wales and it also includes some overseas territories like Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. So you can clearly see why it is wrong to refer to the U.K. as England or to England as the U.K. England also has it's own flag which is something a lot of people don't know most people tend to think of the U.K. flag as the English flag which is also not correct.

I guess because they aren't from there.. . It's the same as how people who aren't Canadians or have never visited Canada think the word "eh" is in every sentence spoken up here lol.

STOP HATING AMERICANS!!!! Not all of us are stupid self centered rednecks like george bush. Ok, I'll admit, some of my friends still think america is the only civilized country in the world. Many Americans are not your stereotypical southern rednecks that you make them out to be.. . PS: As for your question, I know. The UK also includes Wales, scotland. N. Ireland, etc. England is just one subdivision.
