Why do cats chew on cardboard boxes?

I'm glad to see that my cat isn't the only one! She just chews cardboard, but shreds any kind of paper that's thinner. She doesn't try to swallow any of it, so it's not hurting her. It just means I have to clean up her mess. I'm not sure why she does it, but if she's happy, I'm happy. I just think of my cats as "children who will never grow up"!

i wish i could tell you.. my cat does the same thing, although now it has gotten worse because she chews on cards, pictures and anything with a glossy feel. (she even chews on plastic bags from the grocery store!). I have had to get rid of all pictures that are not in frames because she will chew them all up!. I think they like the way it feels on their tongue. My vet said its kinda like how dogs like to chew bones; they just want something to chew on!

I always thought it was because they like the sound. I'm pretty sure that's why they dig paper bags so much, so maybe it's the same?

Well your cat could be doing this for one of four reasons #1 It could be teething. #2 It could be doing this to clean it's teeth. #3 It may think this is a fun game/toy. Or #4 It could be it is taking the pieces of the boxes to make a nest of sorts. Either for sleeping with, or for birthing on. I would say that unless it is chewing it into pieces small enough for it to choke on, don't worry it can't harm you cat.
