What are the benefits of studying history?

My university education is in history. To understand who we are, you need to understand who we were.

I'm stumped........so everyone knows what Gen. Robert E. Lee's horse's name was??........cause you'll never know when one is going to bring that up in a topic of conversation.......Like um...... Never!. . Though I do think Mr. Ed is an important part of history..... and let's not forget Trigger!. . To this day...I haven't needed any of the information that I fell asleep in my history class for. Though without history I have to admit..... ..... ....... ......... ........... ............. .......... ....... ..... I wouldn't have had my daily nap in between P. E. and typing class!. Ideally to prevent making mistakes which happened in the past, but it is not likely to happen this way. For example, every nation claims to abhor war and police actions (undeclared wars), because of it's devastating effect on people, land and environment, but they just keep on finding reasons to fight wars. The reason will always be in the "national interest", which when translated will always mean it is profitable to do so.
