It is because improper spelling used to be a source of shame, but these days people do not care. In fact, many people brag about their bad spelling because they say they are not "wasting time" worrying about spelling.

Schools don't know how to teach spelling. Most people can't spell past the 3rd grade level. That's because they were promoted in school without learning the basics.....)(

I think it is because people read a lot less nowadays. If people read more they learn how to spell things better and your vocabulary is increased. We cannot use the excuse that the English language is to complex this is not true, i have many friends whos first language is not english and they can sometimes spell better than the people who have lived in an english speaking country all their lives.

Because it's not taught in schools as much as it used to be.. I loved spelling tests at school, but we only did them about once a month, up until I was 11.

Laziness, stupidity, sometimes bad typing skills. I wish I could agree with the poster about spellchecker, but I don't see that being used, sadly.. . If anyone ever figures it out, I'll be the first to make a donation for the cure.. . Let's stamp this out!

I suppose one could argue that the English language is terribly complex with too many exceptions for the rules and conventions used when forming words.. . That aside, people simply choose not to learn how to spell correctly, further evidenced by their neglect to use even a conveniently placed spell checking utility.

I think it is a mix of apathy, pride, and urgency. When people are corrected, they get offended and fail to learn the necessary methods to correct themselves since they feel it is a waste of time and expect the other parties involved to be responsible enough to understand what they meant in the first place. And this is the reason I have developed the ability to read minds, so as to make up for the shortcomings of others - lol.. . I have found that watching movies with the captions turned on helps in some ways to recognize how things are spelled.
