What is the meaning and history behind the phrase 'Dutch courage'?

The Dutch were at war with Spain. England formed an alliance with the Dutch. The soldiers were introduced to the Dutch made alcoholic beverage gin, which was distributed to the troops before they went into the lines, and the soldiers who survived the campaign brought the drink back to England and the name Dutch Courage was coined.

"Dutch" is often confused with "Deutsche" (German); as in Deutsche marks (currency).

Oh, yeah, they love their pint. Don't forget they were quite a seafaring nation. You need all your Dutch courage to cross the ocean with no accurate maps and a broken sextant.

no they are not but the English had a lot of wars with Holland about 4 ,and anything out of the ordinary was called dutch.And it started around the 16th century.. . going dutch meant the woman pays half of the restaurant bill,dutch uncle was a friend of the family who was like an uncle to the kids ,but he was not a real uncle.. dutch courage was courage ,but it was not real courage because the alcohol helped.. to light a sigarret with another one is called a dutch f*ck. . it had nothing to do with the Dutch people ,but was language used in England only.. the dutch are hardly aware that these frases exist.
