Why isn't the RED Cross assisting in the reconstruction of New Orleans?

They are good at immediate disaster response, and providing short term emergency shelter and food. They are not skilled at long term resolution of problems for people in need, but they have a great publicity team and therefore get tons of money dumped in their lap. They don't share it either. There are a lot of organizations, including community action agencies, who provide emergency assistance but also long term help to people in need, but they don't get the 15 minutes of fame that Red Cross gets, so Red Cross gets the bulk of the donations.

Isn't that the job of the city, county, state and federal government, not to mention the people that live there? And by the way, why should New Orleans be rebuilt? I mean, who is going to build a fire at a TNT factory?

The Red Cross is ran by the government; Bush doesn't want to acknowledge that anything bad happened on his term of office. The old saying "Out of sight, out of mind" applies here.. . BTW, "Comic Relief" is doing more for New Orleans now.

Why should they? It is the Governments job to do it. The Red Cross helps billions of people, not just Huuricane victims. And they are not here to rebuild, but to help you recover, and give you temporary shelter, and food, and clothes.

Their mission is to help with initial emergency. They are not city builders. The government of that state should take charge. They were given money to fix their levee system and it was squandered away by corruption. The people who live there should stand up and rebuild.

Rebuilding is not their mission. It's more rescue and emergency shelter and protection. Rebuilding is for insurance companies and contractors.. The Red Cross has been caught several times misusing funds. It'll be interesting to see what they do about it.

If I have completely lost my home and I do not have insurance.I do not need excuses. Give me the money to build another home.I think I know what to do.There should not be any exceptions. It is a charity organization. Help anyone that needs it.

When did the Red Cross go into the building industry? I must have missed that. I thought their mission was to provide FIRST aid, which I think they did far more admirably than the government immediately after the Katrina crisis. I hope you are never in an emergency situation, or if you are I hope no-one in the Red Cross saw you post this question, and decides to move on the the next needy person....

I am in the National Guard and went to New Orleans after Katrina. The Red Cross was giving millions of $$ to people needing help. Building an office building is a very small part of their budget. Maybe you should think about donating to them. They are a very worthy charity.
