A tsunami is the movement of the entire water column from the floor of the sea to the surface. In deep water, the visible effect may be as little as a surge in the surface. A tsunami may pass under a ship without the ship even being aware of it.. . The destructive effects of a tsunami do not occur until the ocean floor becomes shallow causing the water column to pile up and become the large wave that is associated with tsunamis.
