How can I determine sales tax when the only information available is the total amount?

Divide by 1 plus the sales tax.... For instance.. If the total is $108 and the sales tax is 8%, then, divide $108 by 1.08.... 100 is the price before tax...

I'm under the assumption that you don't know the rate of the tax and are trying to find out.. . Find out the tax for the area where the purchase was made. You can probably find it by digging around on your state's website.
