Never take the above advice, and rub your dogs nose in it,thats a totally outdated and cruel concept that all proffesional trainers frown on.. How old is your dog?If it's still just a pup chances are it dont have enough controll to hold it all night.Crate training is great, but at some point they still have to go,and while it prolongs it,it does not prevent it.If your dog is still young, you may need to get up halfway thru the night to take it out.If he just cant hold it that long, there is no way to stop it.. . Crates are great, because dogs dont like to potty where they eat and sleep. At some point though, the urge to go is so great, they will go no matter where they are at.

Put him in a smaller crate so that he doesn't have much room to move around. That what the vet. told me.

Try cutting down on the amount of space available to the dog in the crate. Give him/her just enough room to lay down. They will hate having to sleep/lay in their own waste and will very quickly stop the bad behavior. This worked for me in a matter of days with my two pugs.

You need to let him outside before he is crated for the night. Also, if you change his eating schedule, perhaps that might help. My dog is on a schedule that one can pretty well set your watch by. Dogs do not like to sleep in their feces or urine. Take the poor guy out before he goes to bed and give him time to do his "business".

I think others have said basically the same thing, but it's important to get a crate only big enough for your dog to stand up, and lay down in. If he has any more room then that he will relieve himself on one side, and sleep on the other. A dog HATES to sleep in it's waste, so will avoid doing so if at all possible.. . It's also very important to make sure you take the dog out to potty before putting him to bed. Cut down or better yet eliminate snacks/treats at least 2 hours before bedtime. A schedule is a good thing to get your dog used to.. . My dog is fed at 6:00 a.m. and at 6:00 p.m. every day. It's a schedule he knows, and looks forward to. It also gives him time to digest his food, and eliminate before bedtime.. . Also, I know it's tempting sometimes to rub your dogs nose in it's poop. But, your dog doesn't understand why you are doing this to him. It's cruel, and doesn't teach your dog anything except that he must fear you.. . Above all, be patient. You dog will learn, you just have to find out what works for him, and you.
