What is the etiquette behind not placing elbows on the table?

When families ate sat round a table space was at a premium. Some one with their elbows planted firmly in place inconvenieces the diners either side of them.

My mother used to chant a rhyme when I did it:. . Mabel, Mabel strong and able. Take your elbows off the table. This is not a horses stable. But a dining Table.. . She never quite said it, but I was given to think that it was the first step down the slippery slope to hell.. . Took me a long time to realize it was a matter of posture.

It is rude because most people who are doing it know and understand that it is considered a rude thing to do & do it anyway.

Someone once told me there was a royal who used to eat with both his elbows on the table and shoveled meat into his mouth. Everyone thought it was disgusting and so no one wanted to do it. Then I guess it just became good manners not to.. . I don't know if this is true, it may be something my parents made up to keep my from eating with my elbows on the table.

It shows that you are lazy and it takes a lot of space.

It's rude to put your elbows on the table when eating, because you look like a slob, shovelling food in your mouth without lifting your arms.. . Other than that, I think it's OK.

my granny used to say that while eating our heart rate increases a bit, i don't know whether its correct or not and by keeping elbow on table makes the heart to beat faster,since hand is almost equal in height with heart and if this happens daily we will be in risk of blocking the arteries with in 20-25 years, so if anybody says this to children they wont listen. so everyone says that its bad manners to keep elbow on table,especially left elbow because heart is located on left side.. . i don't know whether its correct or not.

because your mom said so..i mean its a bad habbit so our parents tell us that it is rude to place your elbows on the dining table!! every mom tells his child not to do so
