They raise their leg so that (1) pee doesn't get on their leg and (2) So they can mark their territory because you can't mark a tree with your leg down because you'll be marking the ground

They do it for a territoral reason. This is their way of saying "Hey this tree is mine soo no one else take it!!!" Its natural and i have a dog who does this only on certain trees.

to mark his turf (leave his scent) on the fire hydrant or tree, can't do that with both legs on the ground

Here you go: Dogs that lift their legs to #1 are dominant dogs. This is how they mark their territory.

Because, most dogs don't want to dribble on their coat.. How would you like to walk around with pee dripping from your leg!?

My female chihuahua often raises her leg to pee; not sure why, but it always makes me laugh. I think she's afraid of peeing on her foot or something.

So they don't pee on there front legs. Mind you, my dumb pit also raises his leg to poop on tree trunks, fence posts and bushes

Dogs try to mark their territory with their pee. Male dogs can more accurately aim if they lift their legs. If they were to pee standing up, it would run all over their belly and only make themselves smell like their scent.
